Projects 2009-2010:
Khyber Medical College Alumni Association of North America (KMCAANA) has had a busy year, mostly in regards to the humanitarian crisis back home.
Swat Relief:
KMCAANA took the lead in coordinating relief efforts with APPNA during the Swat crisis. Fund raising was done by KMCAANA/APPNA and relief activities on the ground were entrusted to the Social Welfare Society (SWS) of Khyber Medical College (KMC). The volunteer students led by Ali Qazi really made us proud. During the hot summer, our volunteer Khyber students and doctors worked with an unwavering commitment. Free medical camps were held on a daily basis and medicines and other necessary items were provided free of cost. Cash scholarships to the needy and deserving students belonging to Swat at KMC andPeshawarUniversity were also awarded through the SWS. KMCAANA wishes to acknowledge and appreciate the help extended by Professor Hafizullah, Vice Chancellor Khyber Medical University (KMU) and Professor Ejaz Hassan, Vice Principal KMC in supporting the relief work by APPNA/KMCAANA and for their supervision and leadership of the SWS during this crisis.
Last but not the least, KMCAANA wishes to thank all its members and other APPNA members for their generous donations. We also thank the APPNA leadership for their unflinching support and trust during this time of need. Thank you KMCAANA, thank you APPNA and thank you SWS and KMC/KMU.
It should be mentioned that the Khyber SWS, like the years before, was once again the recipient of the best youth wing award by the Red Crescent Society of NWFP. Congratulations to the students of Khyber for keeping the best traditions, you make us proud!
KMCAANA has also been helping an orphanage, Khpal Kor (our home), in Mingora Swat. With the recent crisis there, the need for such efforts has never been so great.
S.Amjad Hussain Endowed Chair:
KMCAANA is very proud to announce that its founding president and a founding member and past president of APPNA, S. Amjad Hussain, has been honored by theUniversity ofToledo by creating an Endowed Chair of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery in his name. It indeed is a singular honor for Khyber and APPNA that one of its most distinguished members has been honored so by an institute of higher learning here in theUnited States. The endowment for the chair will cost $1 million. Dr. Amjadās family, friends and well-wishers have already donated $700,000 towards this goal. We strongly encourage KMCAANA and APPNA members to help reach the target. It is indeed a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much to both of these organizations. For further information please log on to www.utoledo.edu/foundation/hussain
Web page:
Khyber Alumni has been in the process of redesigning its web page. The new web page will have a fresh outlook to keep the members up to date about the activities of the alumni. It will also serve as a bridge between the present students at Khyber and the alumni. A link about news from Khyber is also being planned for the new website. It is anticipated that the website will help better streamline communication between the alumni. We hope to get the new website online this spring.
Khyber-UT Visiting Professor Program:
The Khyber Medical College-University ofToledo visiting professor program has been a success for the last many years now. This program was endowed in 1995 by Dr. S. Amjad Hussain. Under this program, a basic sciences faculty member from Khyber is invited for three months to work in research and learn advanced techniques of teaching at theUniversity ofToledo. The endowment pays for their expenses. It should be noted that the present principal of Khyber, Professor Nargis Parveen, herself has been an alumnus of this program. Others that have so far rotated through this program include Drs. Ejaz Hassan Khan (Pathology), Mudassir Ahmad Khan (Biochemistry), Abid Hussain (Pharmacology), Jawad Khan (Pathology), Zahid Hussain (Forensic Medicine), Saeed Khan (Anatomy) andRiaz Naseem (Pharmacology).
Medical Education Reforms:
KMCAANA has been in touch with theKhyberMedicalUniversity and KMC about the much needed reforms to medical education. We have been encouraged by the active interest in this regard by Professor Hafizullah, VC KMU. KMCAANA has volunteered to help in any and every possible way in helping KMU and KMC reform the medical education system in these institutions.
Document Verification:
We have also actively engaged the college administration on the long standing issue of document verification system for KMCAANA in particular and all Khyber graduates in general. Several proposals in this regard are being discussed. We hope to streamline the process and resolve this issue soon. In the interim, we are helping the alumni, in collaboration with the college, on a case to case basis. We ask any member facing a problem in regards to their document verification, to contact the KMCAANA office bearers. We shall help resolve the issue expeditiously.
Summer Meeting:
KMCAANA is planning for a memorable summer meeting this year inDallas. We hope to have a big attendance. KMCAANA meetings are an opportunity for friends to meet and catch up on what has been happening with each other. These are fun besides brain storming over how best to proceed with alumni affairs the next year and how to help the college. Last year we had a great time inSan Francisco. This year again, we plan on having a cultural activity (read music!) for the meeting. We hope that friends will join us in majority numbers to make the meeting a true success. Please mark your calendars.
Membership:
KMCAANA truly wishes and encourages all Khyber graduates in North America to become members and be actively involved with alumni affairs. This is a great platform to stay in touch. Together we can help each other, reminisce about the great times we have had at Khyber and help revive the spirit. Chances are that you are already a member if you are reading these lines. We encourage you to pick up the phone and encourage and demand your Khyber friends to become members. What are you waiting for? Click on the Membership page and fill out the form!
